Laser Vein Treatment & Sclerotherapy in Newport Beach, CA

Sclerotherapy

Laser Vein Treatment

Lasers treat vascular anomalies by emitting a wavelength preferentially absorbed by hemoglobin (the red portion of blood) in the targeted vessels. The laser causes the vein to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body. Advantages include the speed and non-invasive nature of treatment and the size and depth of vessels that can be treated. The exact cause of these smaller, more superficial veins is unknown; however, heredity is a speculated component. Other possible factors may include hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy, and menopause; constrictive clothing; use of birth control pills; and excessive sun exposure.

Sclerotherapy (Vein Injection)

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose and spider veins. It involves injecting a solution (generally saline) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue and fades from view.

FAQ

While compression stockings are common post-sclerotherapy treatments, they are not absolutely necessary after laser vein treatments.
The face and upper body are treated typically every 4-6 weeks while lower extremities or leg veins every 10-12 weeks. Typically, 3 sessions may be needed, but this is not guaranteed. Post care is a crucial factor in determining the number of sessions one will need.
The fading of the vein will be gradual and will take anywhere from a few weeks up to two months.
Patients should avoid tanning for four weeks before and two weeks after treatment, as darker skin tones may increase the risk of complications. Skin types V-VI, diabetics, and individuals with poor circulation are not ideal candidates, especially for leg vein treatments. Those taking blood thinners or photosensitive medications, pregnant individuals, and those using numbing creams should consult with their provider before treatment.
Cold gel packs can be applied to reduce discomfort, and Tylenol is recommended for pain relief. Avoid sun exposure, strenuous exercise, red wine, rubbing the treated area, and hot showers, saunas, or jacuzzis for 48-72 hours. Treated veins may appear bruised or discolored, which fades within weeks, though brown discoloration may take months; wait eight weeks before scheduling the next session for optimal results.

Side effects are rare but may include blistering, infection, loss of skin color, or scabbing. If scabbing occurs, it usually subsides within two weeks. In most cases, the skin returns back to normal.

Complications include, but are not limited to: hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blisters, burns, infection, allergic reactions, scabbing, scars, and herpes simplex activation. These side effects typically last for only a short time but, in rare cases, can last up to a few months or be permanent.
