What is PRF therapy?
“PRF” stands for “platelet rich fibrin” has a very high concentration of white blood cells, fibrin, and some stem cells. This forms a “scaffold” that releases growth factors, which create new skin cells and collagen. Besides cosmetic uses, it is also used to help people heal from injuries.
The procedure begins with a vial of your own blood being drawn. The blood is processed to separate from the rest of the blood, and then the PRF is injected into the problem area. Sometimes it is combined with dermal fillers for optimum effect.
Platelet-rich fibrin therapy is performed in a series of treatments, typically about 6 to 8 weeks apart. The results can vary, but some patients see improvements to their skin for up to a year. Because the PRF is taken from your own blood, adverse reactions are minimized – you don’t have to worry about having an allergic reaction. There may be some mild pain, minor bruising, and some swelling and soreness. These reactions can be treated with some ice and a topical anesthetic. Most patients can have PRF therapy unless you have a low number of platelets, abnormal platelets, or if you are taking anticlotting medication.
