BOTOX® / Dysport®
BOTOX / Dysport Treatment
BOTOX® and Dysport® work best on “dynamic wrinkles” by blocking the signal from crossing the neuromuscular junction, allowing the muscle to relax and helps to soften the wrinkles that lie above. BOTOX® and Dysport® injections have been FDA approved for use in the cosmetic treatment for glabellar frown lines only the wrinkles between the eyebrows.
The weakening effect gradually begins anywhere from 24 hours to 3 days, and is sometimes not complete for two weeks. These injections are commonly used along the forehead lines and crow’s feet, but have also been to help to prevent excessive sweating as well as migraine headaches
What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?
Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved drugs that are commonly used for cosmetic purposes. These drugs are classified as neuromodulators, meaning that they inhibit muscle contractions. They do so by introducing tiny amounts of purified botulinum toxin into muscles that are responsible for certain types of lines and creases, such as frown lines.
While Botox and Dysport share the use of A botulinum toxins, they differ in their non toxin protein content. Additionally, the manufacturing of Dysport results in smaller molecules than are present in Botox. Overall, the two are far more similar than they are different. Multiple studies have been conducted to better understand how Botox and Dysport perform. Some suggest that the effects of Dysport seem to appear 1 to 2 days sooner than Botox. Dysport also diffuses more widely, perhaps because of the smaller toxin molecules.

How often should I get Botox/Dysport?
Every person reacts differently to Botox/Dysport. The faster the body metabolism is, the sooner the effect will start fading. Individuals how exercise every day, or using sauna/Jacuzzi often, will need more frequent treatments. Regularly patients may schedule to re-do the treatment as often as 2-3 months or up to 6 months.
What should I know prior to getting Botox/Dysport Injections?
The most important step to take before getting Botox or Dysport is to find a qualified provider. All injections at New Look Skin Center are performed by licensed nurse practitioners and registered nurses who have received extensive training in the use of injectables. Once a trusted provider has been located, the next step is to schedule an appointment.
Recovery after Botox/Dysport
One of the major advantages of Botox/Dysport treatment is that side effects are very mild. There is no or little down time after the treatment. They must avoid laying down or bending over for four hours after the treatment, as well as avoid any massaging of the area, exercise and use of sauna/jacuzzi or any kind of tanning for 24 hours.
What are the risks/complications of a Botox/Dysport procedure?
Botox has been one of the most performed nonsurgical treatments in decades. The most common side effects of Botox treatment are transient redness at injection sites, minor swelling and bruising. Additional side effects that are less common are mild headache, drooping eyelid, dry eye, and asymmetry.
Are Botox/Dysport Injections painful?
Botox/Dysport injections are administered with a gentle hand. A tiny needle is being used for inserting the product just beneath the skin, where it absorbs into the muscle over the course of a few days. Patients tolerate this treatment very well without the use of anesthetic. However, if you are concerned about discomfort, talk to your provider. You can use a numbing cream which your health care provider will prescribe it for you, or a small ice pack may be applied right before or right after injections to maintain full comfort.

Where are Botox and Dysport used to erase lines and wrinkles?
Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators, and they only work on dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contractions under the skin. These muscle contractions are involved when we form expressions such as frowning or showing surprise. Go ahead and make a frown. You can feel the muscles around your eyes, between your eyebrows, and on your forehead contract when you do so. These are the areas where neuromodulators are used.
At New Look, we use Botox and Dysport to erase or dramatically lessen the appearance of crow’s feet at the outside of the eyes, frown lines (colloquially known as the 11s) between the eyebrows, and on forehead lines.
Will I have swelling at the injection sites?
Some people have a slight bit of swelling at the injection sites. This is typically true when they have any sort of injection. If this occurs, it usually only lasts a few hours. It can be controlled with the application of a cold compress.
How long do Botox and Dysport provide results?
With these neuromodulators, there is some variation in the duration of your results based on a patient’s individual metabolism. On average, patients can expect Botox and Dysport to erase their crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines for about four months.
How long does my Botox or Dysport injection session take?
These are the original “lunchtime treatments,” because they take just 10-15 minutes, and the patient can return to work immediately after their session.
Is there any preparation necessary before my Botox/Dysport session?
There isn’t anything you need to do to prepare for your injection session at New Look.
How is Botox/Dysport different from dermal fillers?
As mentioned above, Botox and Dysport work their magic by simply blocking the nerve messages from getting to the muscle. This keeps the injected muscle from contracting. Wrinkles that form above these muscle contractions when we form expressions are called dynamic wrinkles. That is where Botox and Dysport are king.
But there is another kind of wrinkle called a “static” wrinkle. Static wrinkles form from sun damage, declining collagen production, personal habits such as smoking, environmental factors, stress, and thinning skin with age. Static wrinkles have nothing to do with muscle contractions; they show themselves at all times once the skin is damaged.
That’s where dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm, come in. When injected beneath a wrinkle or an area of volume loss, such as the cheeks, dermal fillers are true to their name — they simply fill in the space and push the wrinkled skin back upwards. The most popular dermal fillers, Juvéderm and Restylane, are called “natural” fillers because they are made predominantly from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in our bodies and is responsible for hydrating, plumping, and firming the skin. When a filler like Juvéderm is injected beneath a wrinkle, the hyaluronic acid binds with nearby water molecules and this instantly plumps the skin, erasing the wrinkle.
Bottom line? Botox works on dynamic wrinkles only. These occur on the upper third of the face. Dermal fillers only work on static wrinkles that occur mainly on the lower two thirds of the face.
