How to Protect Your Skin From Summer Sun Damage

Sun Damage | New Look Skin Center Medical Spa in Glendale, Encino and Irvine, CA

The summer fun has begun, and it’s time to be outside now more than ever. Harmful UV radiation constantly emitted from the sun can damage your skin and even lead to skin cancer. Thankfully, there are some easy ways to stay safe this summer while also having fun. Let’s explore some easy ways to protect your skin from the sun this summer and what to do about summer sun damage.

Apply and Reapply Sunscreen

Sunscreen is considered the golden standard for sun protection for a reason. Sunscreen works to absorb and reflect UV rays by scattering them before they can penetrate your skin. However, choosing the right sunscreen is just as important as using it in the first place. You should use sunscreen that is rated at least 30 SPF and provides broad-spectrum protection. The summer presents some additional challenges to using sunscreen. Sunscreen is water-resistant but isn’t waterproof. If you’re sweating a lot from the heat or you’ve been swimming, your sunscreen will slowly wear off. It is best to reapply sunscreen every two hours you are outside for optimal protection.

Take Advantage of the Shade

We recommend finding a shady spot for resting whenever you can. This provides a physical barrier from the sun and its UV rays. Avoid multiple hours of direct sun exposure that can damage your face and body, leading to sunburn and other skin damage.

Wear Clothes That Protect Against Sun Damage

Choosing the right clothes is important for protecting your skin from the sun. Long sleeve shirts, pants, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats are all great options for providing a physical barrier from the sun. That being said, it’s important to choose loose-fitting clothing that is lightweight to avoid overheating. If it’s too hot for pants or long sleeve shirts, then make sure the material you choose on your shorter clothing is densely woven to properly block out UV light.
